Sommige dingen moet je snel besluiten en gelijk boeken. Ik ga dus eind deze maand naar The Boat Race in Londen. Even (race duurt ong. 20 minuten) mijn bemanning van mijn team (Oxford!!!) aanmoedigen. Sowieso leuk om bij deze moeder aller roeiwedstrijden (de 157e editie) te zijn. De sfeer is, weet ik nu al, geweldig, het bier dito. De wedstrijd begint 18.00 uur (NL-tijd); de reserve (Isis – Goldie) een half uur eerder. Als vanouds sta ik bij Putney Bridge, daar waar de crews in de boten stappen en waar de start is. Na startsignaal duik ik de pub (Dukes Head) in, om de wedstrijd zelf op tv te volgen. En dat in het totaallijstje van 157 jaar Oxford nipt achter Cambridge staat, is niet relevant!
De historie (in Engels):The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends – Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous years race challenges the opposition to a re-match.
De rest van de dag: boodschappen doen (o.a de beste boekenzaak in Londen, Foyles, Boots, HMV, Starbucks, pubs, etc. Kortom, een leuk weekeinde in het vooruitschiet. Come on, Oxford!
