Ook dit jaar op Oudejaarsdag de Oudejaarspsalm. In het Engels (ben tenslotte in Scotland nu) en wel uit de New International Version, de bijbelversie die in mijn kerk wordt gebruikt.

yes, establish the work of our hands.
Voor veel liefhebbers van dit van oorsprong bekende Goudse dixielandorkest een onverwacht genoegen: het 40-jarig bestaan van deze band, die grotendeels nog steeds dezelfde bezetting heeft, wordt op zondagmiddag 9 januari groots gevierd in Restaurant t Vaantje aan de Korssendijk te Reeuwijk.
Naast trompettist/zanger Hans van den Heuvel, saxofonist/zanger Karel Fray, clarinettist Jan Wouter Alt, pianist Frans van Eijk, slagwerker Willem Huurman en leider/banjoist/presentator Ed van Dantzig zal de formatie een tweetal top/gastsolisten bevatten. En wel twee leden van The Dutch Swing College Band, de langste bassist van Nederland Adrie Braat en trombonist George Kaatee.
Al met al zal het orkest voor een royale portie onvervalste swing van weleer zorgen!
The Dutch Swing Society is ontstaan op het Coornhert Gymnasium te Gouda. Het orkest heeft in zijn honderd procent-amateurloopbaan tal van bijzondere optredens gekend en op de meest uiteenlopende plaatsen muziek gemaakt. Zoals ongeveer overal in Nederland, in Solingen, Antwerpen, in New York, Chicago, New Orleans en Miami.
The DSS was de eerste band, die van de Amerikaanse vakbonden toestemming kreeg te mogen optreden in de authentieke jazzclubs van New Orleans en enige maanden later op het wereldberoemde New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. En dat voor een publiek van 80.000 mensen. Bandleider Ed van Dantzig werd bij deze gelegenheid benoemd tot ereburger van New Orleans. In eigen land was de band het basisorkest van het door Van Dantzig en anderen 12 jaar lang georganiseerde, succesvolle Randstad Jazz Festival.
In t Vaantje trad de band vele jaren op. Vaak met Amerikaanse top-jazzmusici als Buddy Tate, Wild Bill Davison, Billie Butterfield, Teddy Wilson, Peanuts Hucko en Freddy Moore. Ook met topzangeressen als Rita Reys, Yvon de Kok en Beryl Briden. Dit alles werd mogelijk gemaakt door de toenmalige uitbater van t Vaantje van weleer, Hans van Velden, die dagelijks nog volop actief is in het Goudse restaurant Scheeps. Hans van Velden is op zondag 9 januari dan ook eregast van de band n van de huidige eigenaren van t Vaantje, Jolanda en Ernst-Willem van der Lee.
Het optreden begint om 15.00 uur. De toegang is gratis.

Heerlijke voorstelling van Dolf Jansen, vanavond in de Goudse Schouwburg. Zijn oudejaarsvoorstelling. Alles komt langs: PVV, CDA-congres (us Camielke, us Maxime), het misbruik in de katholieke kerk, de kinderdagverblijven, de hypocrisie van de Telegraaf, de problemen rond de NS, het gebrek aan strooizout. Kortom, anderhalf uur lang – O ja, dat is waar ook – herinneringen aan 2010. Fraai gitaar- en pianospel ook van Marinus de Goederen van de band A Balladeer.
Gezellig paar dagen met zus E. naar Newcastle geweest. Shoppen (wat een leuke winkels in Newcastle, zeg) en genieten van het eten en drinken aan boord van de veerboot. Nu eens geen foto van het eten aan boord, maar van onze lounge a/b van de King of Scandinavia: de bar en de bubbels.
Mochten jullie trek krijgen: ik schuif zo dadelijk aan in het 7 Seas restaurant a/b King of Scandinavia voor een smakelijke vismaaltijd met bijbehorende wijn. En morgenavond nog een keer. Waarom? Omdat ik even naar de overkant ga voor (kerst)inkopen.

Zoals ik op deze weblog bijgewoonde schouwburgvoorstellingen met sterren bedeel, krijgt deze serie van mij standaard 5/5. Kijken dus!

As well as explaining why an elephant wouldn’t make the grade on Strictly Come Dancing, the science lectures will reveal why hamsters can skydive without a parachute, why an ant can lift over 100 times its bodyweight, why chocolate is so amazing and how we could build a lift to the moon.
The Christmas Lectures will be a firm fixture in the Christmas calendars of families up and down the country. The RI Christmas Lectures have been entertaining and educating children and adults alike since 1825 and have been an inspirational force for many budding scientists, including TV talent Dallas Campbell from Bang Goes the Theory, who took up a career in science after watching the lectures.
This year’s series will be given by Dr Mark Miodownik, a materials scientist from King’s College London, who will explore the extraordinary world of size and scale in the three part lecture series called Size Matters’.
Dr Miodownik, an experienced science communicator, will travel from the microscopic world beneath our fingertips, to the tallest mountain on Earth and into the universe. Here is a sneak preview of some of the science he’ll be unraveling in the lectures:
–Why elephants can’t dance: Although they’re one of the biggest and most charismatic animals on Earth, elephants can’t dance because of their low area to volume ratio. Their legs are big and heavy to support their weight, but this impairs their ability to jump, change direction and dance, like an elegant ballerina.
– How hamsters can sky dive: The size of an animal determines its likelihood of surviving a fall from an aeroplane or a tall building. Smaller animals hit the ground with a proportionally lower force. That’s why, whilst falling out of an aeroplane is fatal for humans, hamsters live and spiders don’t even feel the impact. Don’t try this at home!
– Why chocolate tastes so melt-in-the mouth good: Chocolate melts in your mouth thanks to the crystal structure of the cocoa butter that is used to make it. The crystal structure is created when molecules fit together and build to make up the cocoa butter fat. Getting this crystal structure right is the trick and it’s not easy – there are six different crystal structures and only one works for chocoholics.
– Why ants are so strong: An ant can lift 100 times its own body weight compared to an Olympic weightlifter, who can only lift double their own weight on a good day. This is because, being so light, ants only use a small amount of their muscles to hold themselves up, leaving the rest of their strength for lifting. So, as things get bigger they get proportionally weaker.
– Can we build a lift to the moon? Until now there has not been a material strong enough to withstand the
huge gravitational forces that dominate as you start to move up into space. But recently we discovered super strong materials, which make steel look as soft as butter by comparison, and which could indeed make it possible to build an elevator to the moon.
On giving this year’s lectures, Dr Miodownik said: ,,I’m delighted to be delivering this year’s RI Christmas Lectures on BBC Four. I watched the lectures when I was small and it feels amazing to be on the other side of the show. Hopefully, this year’s lectures will help inspire another generation of young scientists. De eerste ervaringen met de andere auto (Mazda 6, 2.0i) zin zeer postief. Sowieso is voertuig vergeleken met de 22 jaar oude 626 Coup pittiger, rustiger, beter en wat er nog meer voor superlatieven zijn te bedenken. De uitrusting is rijker dan me was voorgeschoteld (Bluetooth voor de telefoons, aansluiting voor de Ipod). Even wennen aan de verhouding koppeling gaspedaal, maar dat gaat snel. Heel fijn: cruise control, electronic climate control, 6 versnellingen, de ruimte, de vormgeving de kleur, etc. Al blijft die oude, trouwe, rode Mazda 626 Coup mijn grote liefde, de nieuwe auto is meer dan second best.
